4 tips before start hiking Lefka Ori

Hiking in the Lefka Ori mountains is not an easy task. Many people have been in danger on these rough mountains. We give you 4 basic tips for hiking safely in the mountains.

1. Get a map. Just go old school! Don’t trust your GPS device completely. The trails on Lefka Ori mountains are not always clear and you need to double check them. Despite the hard work by the Mountaineering Clubs or others the signs may not be easily visible due to the landscape. Sometimes you have to look for a couple of stones on top of each other in a desert of rocks and stones, trying to decode and find out what happened there: ”is it just by chance or did someone put them there to show me the direction of the path?

Also GPS’s can break down or be ”blind” due to lack of signal and … of course maps are always cool!

2. Make sure you have enough water with you. These mountains keep tiny amounts of water in their water tanks.  Springs are really rare and not always with fresh water. Before you start calculating the number of bottles you will need for your hike make sure you also take into account the high temperatures of the summer and the lack of trees and shade.

3. Talk to the people you meet.  They may be coming from the direction you want to go. You can get valuable information about the condition of the trail, or you can just make sure your calculations were correct and you are walking the route you want. You can also be very helpful to them for the same reasons, or someone may need your help!

Socializing in the mountains may be useful, it may have been the first social media, but for sure is nice and kind!

4. Hire a local guide. A guide can be your map and GPS, you’ll have a nice company on  the way and great help in case you need it.

The only thing you’ll have to worry about is that you’ll still have to carry your own water!

  1. Hey there, love your blog!
Great post! Your tips are very helpful for anyone planning to hike in the Lefka Ori mountains. I particularly liked the suggestion to talk to fellow hikers for additional information on the trails. Have you ever had any interesting conversations with fellow hikers while out in the mountains?
